Ruth and Nate - advice from a parent who has had kids in sports for the last 20 years, including the last 4 with our youngest in college cross country and track. Best thing I learned was that as my knowledge of the sport and the teammates grew - it was not my job to coach from the sidelines. Let the coach be the coach and my responsibility as a parent was to encourage and support. It's fun to ask your own child about what they understand about their own training and progress and if they have any strategies or goals for the race or game. But then just keep on cheering and providing support before and after the races or games. Also, to learn the teammates names is very good also. I was one of those loud parents cheering.
