Thank god Tolkein made it through WW1...
"Death is just another path, one that we all must take."
I struggled with depression and introversion for many years, to the point where I dropped out of university, stayed at home (sometimes for many days without even going on the balcony to just grab some fresh air) and had literally no idea or even the will to decide what I wanted to do with my life. I had no friends and felt alone. I lied to myself back then that isolation is peace, but you can only fool yourself with that for a while. At some point, I ordered the LOTR Extended trilogy. I had seen the films in the theatres as a child still, but not since then and had forgotten most of the plot. After watching them again, I got stuck in the scene with Gandalf and Frodo in Moria, where Frodo expresses that he wished none of this had happened. At that point, I saw some similarities in Frodo and me. But I will not lie, Gandalf's response hit me like a rock: "So do all who get to live such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us." You cannot imagine how much of an impact these words had on me. I watched this scene again and again. To put a long story short, it gave me the initial push I so desperately needed. Even though it was not easy at first, I overcame my depression, became a more open person towards others, completed my studies, found a job that I like and generally, returned to how life should be. I have never been happier in my life than now. To all out there, suffering from similar issues: You are not alone. There are countless like you. When I was affected, I had literally no faith or self-esteem at all. NONE. I did not think myself able to overcome my insecurities. But then, a wizard in a fantasy world made me realise that all you need is a spark. Something that is your driving force. No, it will not be easy at first, but if you can find the will to say "I really WANT to do this.", even when sometimes you might think you cannot, you will be surprised by what your persistence can reveal about your inner self. I certainly was. Thank you, Gandalf, for giving me words to live by, and thank you, uploader, for bringing tears to my eyes.
And now I understand: stories are not to entertain us; they are to remind us of what really matters, because even the strongest and wisest forget at times.
“Perhaps it is because I’m afraid... And he gives me courage.” An immortal being holding on to such a small piece of a big world, afraid of what’s before himself. It never fails to give me some hope for this one.
"true courage is about knowing not when to take a life but when to spare it"
I think the best thing about LOTR series is how in a world of chaos and evil, there is always good, even as a flickering light in all the darkness, and the people willing to do good. The lessons are very simple: be kind, be loyal, be brave - and yet they are conveyed in such profound manner that they stay with you years after.
Gandalf has taught me more than most people in my life...
"Many that live deserve death, some who die deserve life, can you give to to them Frodo? Do not be so eager to deal out death and judgement". I love that, beautiful.
My mom died from cancer just a few weeks ago. She and I loved Gandalf to heart. And I told her a few Gandalf quotes, she thanked me. Then died. Love you mom!
The message Tolkien was so desperate to impart to us when he wrote The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings is so simple and timeless that it's easy to forget it when times seem tough and uncertain: have courage, hold on to hope, and never, ever stop fighting for life and love in the face of evil. We would do well to listen to his message
Saruman believes it is only great power that keeps evil in check, but that is not what I have found, it is simple acts of kindness and love that keeps the darkness at bay"
The music .. the aesthetic .. the dialogue .. the pacing .. the characters .. the stakes .. the acting .. the sets .. absolutely a one of a kind production. Thank you Peter Jackson for giving us such an epic and faithful adaptation.
i cant explain how the lord of the rings changed my life in so many ways. lord of the rings will always be in my heart even in death
How this video is not as popular as it should be saddens me. It encapsulates the one thing I love about these films: it's ability to inspire hope, and to encourage kindness.
I never realized how much of a part gandalf played in my life growing up
One of Gandalf’s greatest strengths is his empathy.
When my grandma used to read LOTR to me as a kid, she would always say "listen to Gandalf. He has love in his heart." we saw the movies together too. Now she has sailed to the undying lands...I miss her so much. Thank you for this.
"Death is just another path; one that we all must take." Rest in peace Bilbo Baggins
