Changing The Starter Pinion On A Craftsman Rider Mower (Briggs and Stratton 20HP)
In this video, I troubleshoot and fix my Craftsman mower with a 20-horsepower Briggs & Stratton engine. The mower wasn’t starting, and after investigating, I found the pinion gear teeth were chewed up, preventing it from engaging with the ring gear.
I walk you through:
-Identifying the problem with the pinion gear.
-Removing the spring-loaded C clamp (with a minor mishap!).
-Replacing the damaged gear with a new one.
-Reassembling everything and getting the mower running again.
Even though the ring gear is slightly damaged, the quick $13 gear replacement saved me from a more expensive repair, at least for now. I’ll likely need to replace the ring gear in the future, but for today, we’re back in business!
