Why Fighting Burnout Only Makes it Worse #burnout

Burnout, chronic stress, and nervous system imbalance: it's important to understand your body's warning signals. Burnout happens when you've been living in constant stress or danger for a long time. It will feel like your body is starting to shut down, which causes most people to push back and fight to keep going - which makes things worse. Our bodies are designed to go into survival mode to keep us alive, and so when you are close to burning out or have burnt out, your body will start to shut down motivation and energy: literally making you stop. The reason our bodies do this is because there is an imbalance in our nervous system: the sympathetic nervous system (fight/flight response) is constantly working while the parasympathetic nervous system (rest/restore) is not being used - this is an unhealthy and physically dangerous state to be in.

Living with complex trauma combined with our hectic personal and professional lives make avoiding burnout seem impossible. But, it's possible to recover from it by understanding complex trauma and learning to meet our own needs and set the right boundaries.
